The best thing I’m reading is Roberto González’s Zapotec Science: Farming and Food in the Northern Sierra of Oaxaca. I started it on a recent trip into the Northern Sierra and I’m still savoring it. The worst is Richard Brook and Nick Dunn’s Urban Maps: Instruments of Narrative and Interpretation in the City which I’m finishing only because I committed to review it: trendy topics, deadly prose. Ryan Ridge’s American Homes: a novel(la), which I’m reading in galleys, is its other: mundane topic, but the sentences snap and snarl. So does every panel of Scott Pilgrim which is even better than the terrific movie. And I’m on my ninth traversal of Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin novels, now into The Hundred Days, every night before bed, twenty to thirty pages.
