Fady Joudah is a physician of internal medicine. His first poetry collection, The Earth in the Attic is the recipient of the Yale Series for Younger Poets, judged by Louise Glück. He is also the translator of Mahmoud Darwish’s most recent poetry collected in The Butterfly’s Burden.

Mahmoud Darwish , a Palestinian, is one of the most admired and important Arab poets today. Over forty years of writing more than thirty books of prose and poems, he has influenced and modernized poetic forms. He has received international recognition as a French Knight of Belle Arts and Letters and in 2002, he was awarded the Lannan Cultural Freedom prize. In 2005, he received the prestigious Prins Claus award for poetic achievement from Holland, and in 2007 he received the Golden Wreath award of Macedonia.

His poetry and prose have been translated into more than twenty languages. His most recent book in English is The Butterfly's Burden, from Copper Canyon Press. Mahmoud Darwish currently shares his residence between Ramallah, Palestine and Amman, Jordan.
