Among the things by which my house
is haunted: a well-used field guide
to North American birds, loose
pages now, spine long since unglued;
one gold wedding band, of no use
now to anyone, its inside
inscribed and dated; various
stoneware and stainless patterns, odd-
numbered, mismatched, no setting
complete; a watch that won’t keep time.
Not worth selling, not worth keeping,
but no item merely item:
each haunted, each also haunting.
That by which just is those by whom.
