from Probable Lives

The following are selected translations from the book Probable Lives by the Spanish poet Felipe Benítez Reyes. Benítez’s book was originally published in 1995 by Visor Libros and won Spain’s National Book Award and National Critics’ Award. BOA Editions, Ltd released the English/Spanish edition in 2006 as part of the Lannan Translation Series.

Probable Lives reads as an anthology of twentieth century Spanish poets compiled and introduced by an unnamed anthologist. This anthologist and the character-poets whose work he compiles are fictional however and do not reflect the work of the real-life author, Felipe Benítez, who composes these texts with the intention that both biographic notes and poems be considered as literary objects.
