Uncle Never Knew

Edwin Thumboo A life-time devoted to scholarship and and education marks Thumboo as much as his poetry: Rib Of Earth (L. Fernando, 1956), the award-winning volumes Gods Can Die (Heinemann, 1977) and Ulysses By The Merlion (Heinemann, 1979), A Third Map: New And Selected Poems (UniPress, 1993), Friends: 15 Poems (Landmark Books, 2003), and Still Travelling (Ethos Books, 2008). He received Singapore’s first Cultural Medallion in 1979, the SEA WRITE Award (Bangkok, 1979), ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award in Literature (1987), the Raja Rao Award for contributions to the literature of the Indian Diaspora (2002), and the Public Service Medal (Singapore, 2006). He was Chairman of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies VII Triennium (1983 to 1986). An Emeritus Professor of the National University of Singapore, he has lectured and given readings in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America, the most recent being in Beijing and Shanghai. Peter Nazareth’s full-length study, Edwin Thumboo: Creating A Nation Through Poetry (Ethos Books), appeared in 2008. He is currently working on his next volume of poems
