Calls for Submissions

Drunken Boat seeks work for a special section: Librotraficante and the New Latino Renaissance.

In solidarity with the Librotraficante movement, sparked by Arizona’s HB2281 and the Tucson Unified School District’s resulting ban of Mexican American Studies, Drunken Boat seeks work by creators of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, spoken word, and experimental/mixed media that honors our country’s Latino heritage. The portfolio embraces quantum demographics, which, in the words of Librotraficante founder Tony Diaz, “pinpoint and celebrate the bridges that already exist between us.” Submissions will be considered through this lens of cultural intersection as it pertains to the New Latino Renaissance. Submit

Drunken Boat seeks poems that engage with debt: the friction between desire and limits, the intersection of ownership and obligation.

Poems need not be limited to the political. Special attention will be given to work that considers form when exploring this theme. Limit three poems. Submit

We have extended the deadlines for 3 of our folios, due out this summer. We’d love it if you would spread the word.

The Bernadette Mayer Folio Bernadette Mayer’s writing experiments, from the 1970s to the present, challenge artists to change the world. We are looking for art and writing that responds to this notion and/or to Bernadette Mayer. Your response can be written, performance-based, filmed, recorded, visual. We seek responses through any medium, and encourage media projects. Consider ways in which your response might operate at the intersection of conceptual art, performance and experimental work.

Deadline: May 15.

Nonfiction Folio The next nonfiction folio for Drunken Boat has the theme of “Portraits.” Written portraits of all shapes, sizes, and themes. Also photographs, paintings, video, and multi-media pieces. Please submit via the submissions manager in the general nonfiction category.

Deadline: May 15

Slant/Sex We’re looking for fiction, essays, photography, art, video, sound, and web art that are bold, honest investigations of the sexual female/trans self that polite society has yet to fully embrace. We particularly encourage submissions from women of color, older women, queer women, women with disabilities, and transgender/two-spirit/intersex/gender nonconforming folks. We reject the gender binary, acknowledge that people have multiple ways of identifying their gender, and seek to be fully inclusive of all women-identified and trans-identified people in this call.

We are NOT accepting poetry for Slant/Sex at this point. We are still accepting poetry for our Poetics folio and Bernadette Mayer folio, but unfortunately, no poetry submitted for the Slant/Sex folio will be considered.

Deadline: May 15.
